Most Indonesia dive liveaboards are geared towards certified divers and it is often not possible to get SCUBA certified on the boat. Most divers joining these liveaboards have some experience, the longer trips to remote areas appeal to the more experienced diver looking to see something new and to get away from the crowds.
Some Indonesia dive destinations have challenging diving conditions, especially strong currents. Consider that dive guides on the dive liveaboards are there to guide you, their primary role is to lead divers around a dive site and to point out all the highlights along the way. They do this expertly. Their job is not to hold your hand throughout a five metre dive, if you need that kind of service you should stick to resort diving. We don't mean to imply that the guides aren't helpful, they are generally excellent, as are the boat crew who will assist you on deck. We just intend to point out that it is best to have your diving skills up to scratch before you join a liveaboard trip.
If you wish to further your dive training on a liveaboard trip that is normally possible. Advanced courses and con-ed courses are available, although pre booking may be necessary. Popular specialty courses are Enriched Air Nitrox and Photography courses. These type of courses can be easily integrated into the scheduled dives on the trip without any disruption.
Many Indonesia liveaboards have regular special guests about who can offer tips on underwater photography or lectures on marine life. Even if there is no formal training or resultant qualification you are still sure to learn a great deal.
