Nusa Laut, located to the east of Ambon is a popular dive site for it's diversity of coral and fish life. There are many species of healthy hard corals including brain, table, staghorn and leather corals. Plus soft corals, seafans, featherstars and barrel sponges. The reef is home to a myriad of reef fish as well as a few reef sharks and some pelagic vistors. Grouper

The fish are not fearful of divers, allowing them to get close, a real bonus for underwater photographers. Currents are generally mild, the water is warm and visibility is good making Nusa Laut a dive area suitable for all levels of diver.

Akoon is a wall dive on the south east side of Nusa Laut. This dive site could be called Snapper Wall as there are so many of them here including yellow striped, humpback and blacktail snapper.

Look out for pygmy snapper and red mangrove snapper, two species that are less common elsewhere. There are also several different species of triggerfish, butterflyfish and angelfish, highlighting why Indonesian diving is regarded as the most diverse in the world. If you start counting the shrimp and nudibranch species here you'll have to surface for a new tank, several times!

The sloping reef off the north east coast at Amet is a shallow dive with good hard coral coverage, coloured with crinoids, sea whips and christmas tree worms. Reef fish are abuntant here including many juveniles. Blue spotted stingrays can be found in the sand, so can patches of garden eels. Leaf ScorpionfishAlso look out for flounder, mantis shrimps, stick pipefish and ribbon eels. White tip reef sharks can often be seen out in deeper water.

North of Amet jetty is a deep wall dive down to 45 metres with some interesting caverns to explore. Gorgonian fans and barrel sponges are surrounded by smaller reef fish such as anthias and damsels. Lionfish and bearded scorpionfish are abundant. Moray eels including giant and honeycomb moray can be found poking from coral crevices.

Marble rays can be found in deeper water as can reef sharks. On the top of the reef hard corals proliferate, especially staghorn coral. Anemones are home to anemone fish who doggedly defend their hosts. This is a great dive site for finding smaller critters and nudibranch but also keep and eye out away from the wall for trevally and rainbow runners.
